WKU Announces Temporary Closure of Regents and Normal Halls

BOWLING GREEN, KY – Western Kentucky University (WKU) has announced the temporary closure of Regents Hall and Normal Hall for necessary repairs and updates throughout the upcoming academic year, following an independent engineering assessment indicating code-related issues. Additionally, Hilltopper Hall, which has been closed since 2024, is set for demolition due to extensive construction flaws deemed infeasible to repair.

The assessment, commissioned by the nonprofit Student Life Foundation (SLF), determined that the ceilings in both Regents Hall and Normal Hall require replacement to comply with current building codes. In addition, necessary bracing will be installed on the first and second floors of each building to improve their resistance against high winds and seismic activity. While these two halls do not share the major structural concerns observed in Hilltopper Hall, certain components do not meet Kentucky’s commercial occupancy standards, which necessitates their temporary closure for repairs before students can return.

Regents Hall, which accommodates 375 students, and Normal Hall, with a capacity of 260 students, combined affect approximately 1,000 students’ housing assignments. The closures are expected to pose challenges, as Hilltopper Hall previously provided housing for around 400 students. However, the SLF has confirmed that WKU has adequate capacity to meet on-campus housing demands despite these closures. To assist with the housing needs, a lease agreement is being finalized with the Hyatt Place hotel, located adjacent to the campus, which will offer additional housing options for students.

WKU Housing and Residence Life is actively working on updating housing assignments for affected students. Staff are available for inquiries and can be reached via phone and email to assist with the transition process and address any student concerns.

The need for the assessment of Regents and Normal Halls arose after SLF expressed concerns regarding potential issues similar to those identified in Hilltopper Hall. Both Regents Hall and Normal Hall opened in the fall of 2021 as part of a $48 million living-learning complex on WKU’s campus. The SLF has since confirmed the decision for the permanent closure and demolition of Hilltopper Hall after the assessment highlighted extensive construction and design flaws present in the building.

The results of the independent assessment, conducted by a nationally recognized firm, were deemed necessary after safety concerns regarding the structural integrity of Hilltopper Hall came to light. Certificates of occupancy were obtained for both Regents and Normal Halls before they opened to ensure that the buildings met safety regulations at that time. However, as safety standards are continually updated, this assessment was commissioned in the spring of 2025 as a precautionary measure to ensure the welfare of WKU’s students.

The future use of the site where Hilltopper Hall stands will be determined at a later date, as discussions around its redevelopment will need to consider the findings of the recent assessments and the evolving demands of student housing at WKU.
