Bowling Green, KY – Western Kentucky University (WKU) has announced the temporary closure of Regents Hall and Normal Hall for essential code-related repairs, affecting approximately 1,000 students. The closures are set to last through at least the upcoming academic year. In addition, Hilltopper Hall, which has been vacant since early 2024, will be demolished after an independent engineering assessment deemed repairs infeasible.
Both Regents Hall and Normal Hall were opened in the fall of 2021 as part of WKU’s First Year Village, a significant $48 million living-learning complex designed to enhance the collegiate experience. However, the assessment revealed that the ceilings in both residence halls require replacement to comply with building codes. Furthermore, additional structural improvements, including bracing on the first and second floors, are necessary to bolster resistance against high winds and seismic activity.
With these closures, a shift in housing assignments for the affected students is required. Although approximately 1,000 students will need to adjust their living arrangements, university officials have confirmed that WKU maintains sufficient on-campus housing capacity to meet student demands. A lease agreement with a nearby hotel, Hyatt Place, is currently being finalized to offer additional housing options for students during this transition period.
The decision to close Regents and Normal Halls comes after the Student Life Foundation (SLF), which owns the residence halls, initiated an independent assessment as a precautionary measure due to concerns regarding potential issues similar to those that plagued Hilltopper Hall. The SLF’s investigation followed an in-depth structural analysis of Hilltopper Hall, which identified widespread construction and design flaws.
Despite not sharing the extensive structural problems found in Hilltopper Hall, both Regents Hall and Normal Hall were found to have components that do not meet Kentucky’s commercial occupancy standards. The SLF Chair, Brad Howard, noted that while repairs are essential, the conditions in these halls are not as dire as those in Hilltopper Hall.
The closure of Hilltopper Hall has affected 400 students, leading to its significant announcement this year. This residence hall had been closed following the discovery of construction flaws that rendered it untenable for student living. As a result, the SLF has also initiated legal action against the architecture firm Sewell and Sewell Architects, PLLC, and the contractor Scott, Murphy & Daniel, who were associated with Hilltopper Hall’s construction.
The future use of the Hilltopper Hall site remains uncertain after its planned demolition. However, WKU leadership continues to focus on the well-being of students, ensuring that the university provides a premier living and learning experience. Updated housing assignments are being systematically distributed, and the SLF is prepared to assist students with inquiries through phone and email over the upcoming weekend.
As WKU navigates these necessary changes, the university is committed to maintaining a supportive environment for all students during this transitional phase.
