BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – More than 3,300 graduates will participate in the Spring Commencement at Western Kentucky University (WKU) on May 8, 2025. This significant event will celebrate the academic achievements of students earning degrees in various programs from both the spring and summer semesters.

The commencement ceremony will begin with a Topper Walk from the Charles Hardcastle Kentucky Building to Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium, a tradition that marks the transition from students to graduates. WKU will confer a total of 94 associate degrees, 2,071 bachelor’s degrees, 583 master’s degrees, 50 doctoral degrees, 15 specialist degrees, 431 undergraduate certificates, and 112 graduate certificates. The ceremony will feature remarks from WKU President Timothy Caboni, as well as recognition of honor graduates and award winners.

Following the formal ceremony, the Big Red Bash will take place on the South Lawn, concluding with a fireworks display to celebrate the graduates’ achievements. Additionally, regional WKU campuses will host pre-commencement events to engage local communities.

Retention and Graduation Rates on the Rise

WKU has reported impressive retention and graduation rates this year. The fall undergraduate retention rate reached 85.7%, the highest the university has seen in 15 years. Moreover, the six-year graduation rate is now recorded at 57.9%, which marks another institutional record for WKU. The retention rate for fall-to-fall students peaked at 78.3%, highlighting the university’s commitment to student success.

Retention among low-income first-year students has also reached a new high at 73.4%, a record since tracking began in 2011. Furthermore, over 91% of first-time, first-year students returned for the spring semester, an increase of 4.7 percentage points compared to the 2017-18 academic year. This improvement underscores the institution’s efforts to admit students with a higher likelihood of success while working to reduce financial burdens for those at risk of academic failure.

Supportive Scholarships and New Programs

As part of its initiative to support students, recent changes in WKU’s scholarship program have allowed approximately 93% of incoming students to receive some form of financial aid, helping to facilitate their academic journey.

WKU also continues to expand its academic offerings, with the Board of Regents approving new programs, including a Bachelor of Science in User Experience, as well as Undergraduate Certificates in Business Fundamentals and Business Law. These programs aim to enhance the educational opportunities available to students and equip them with skills relevant in today’s workforce.

Student-Athlete Achievements and Academic Performance

In addition to the graduation of general student populations, WKU is also celebrating the success of its student-athletes, with 81 individuals set to graduate this spring and summer. Out of these, 66 will participate in the spring graduation ceremony. The average GPA for WKU’s spring graduates stands at 3.29, while summer graduates have a slightly higher average of 3.34. The university has achieved its highest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in program history at 88%, as reported by the NCAA, indicating the strong academic performance of its student-athletes.

Looking Ahead

As WKU prepares to honor its graduates on May 8, 2025, the university reflects on its commitment to fostering an environment of academic excellence and student support. This year’s commencement ceremony promises to be a memorable celebration of hard work, perseverance, and future aspirations for all graduates.
