In a related announcement, Hilltopper Hall, closed since February 2024, is slated for demolition due to infeasible repair costs and significant structural problems.

On May 16, 2025, the Student Life Foundation (SLF), which oversees campus residence halls, revealed the findings of an independent engineering assessment. This evaluation indicated that the ceilings in both Regents and Normal Halls require replacement to meet current building codes. Furthermore, added structural enhancements, including bracing on the first and second floors, are necessary to improve resistance against high winds and seismic activity.

Regents Hall accommodates 375 students, while Normal Hall houses 260 students. The closures will necessitate adjustments in housing assignments for those affected, although WKU has confirmed that adequate capacity remains to meet on-campus housing demands. To assist in these transitions, WKU’s Housing and Residence Life staff will be available via phone and email over the weekend.

Additionally, WKU is working on a lease agreement with the Hyatt Place hotel, situated next to the campus, to offer flexible housing options to those displaced by the closures of Regents and Normal Halls.

Hilltopper Hall, originally built in 2018 for an estimated $40 million, was supposed to reopen its doors in fall 2026. However, severe structural issues have forced SLF to opt for demolition. The closure of these halls raises important concerns about student accommodation and the university’s plan to ensure student well-being during the construction and repair periods.

WKU’s administration has reassured students of its commitment to maintain a premier living and learning environment throughout these changes. They have outlined plans for additional renovations for several existing residence halls over the summer and are open to providing new housing options to cater to students’ needs.

The total investment for the construction of Regents and Normal Halls reached approximately $48 million. Both halls, while facing issues, do not exhibit the extensive structural flaws that plagued Hilltopper Hall, according to SLF Chair Brad Howard.

In terms of accountability, the Student Life Foundation has initiated legal action against the architectural firms involved in Hilltopper Hall’s construction. This action reflects the seriousness of the problems encountered and the impact on student life and university resources.
