Lynchburg, Virginia – Western Kentucky University (WKU) clinched its first Conference USA Championship title by defeating Jacksonville State (Jax State) 6-5 in a thrilling 11-inning game at Liberty Baseball Stadium. The victory not only secures the championship for WKU but also advances the team to the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2009.

This win marks a significant milestone for the Hilltoppers, as it is their first conference title game win since 2008 and improves their record to 4-2 in conference championship history. WKU has had a stellar season, boasting an overall record of 46-12, and is now just one win shy of tying the program record of 47 wins set in 1980. The team has also achieved a perfect 4-0 record in postseason play for the first time since 2004.

The game showcased a series of dramatic moments, beginning with Jax State taking an early lead with an RBI single in the first inning. WKU quickly retaliated, tying the score with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Jax State extended its lead to 4-1 by the fourth inning, but WKU made a comeback starting with a home run by Ethan Lizama, trimming the deficit to 4-2.

The momentum shifted further when Ryan Wideman hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, bringing WKU within one run at 4-3. In a pivotal seventh inning, Joe Siervo’s two-run homer allowed WKU to take its first lead of the game at 5-4. However, Jax State managed to tie the game again at 5-5 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning, which set the stage for a dramatic finish.

With the game still tied in the 11th inning, Siervo delivered the final blow with a walk-off single, sealing the championship win for WKU. This game marked the third walk-off victory in four postseason games for the Hilltoppers, and it was their seventh walk-off of the season.

Ethan Lizama played a crucial role in the tournament and was honored with the Russell D. Anderson Most Valuable Player Award. He compiled an impressive .389 batting average, hitting three home runs and accumulating seven RBIs throughout the tournament. Additionally, he, along with Ryan Wideman, Austin Haller, and Carlos Vasquez, earned spots on the C-USA All-Tournament Team.

The pitching staff contributed significantly to WKU’s victory; Gavin Perry started the game and allowed three earned runs over three innings while striking out two batters. Lucas Hartman delivered a standout performance in relief, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings, while Cal Higgins closed out the game with four innings, permitting one run and striking out four batters.

Throughout the championship game, WKU collected six runs on six hits, coupled with seven walks, and recorded six RBIs. Joe Siervo’s performance was impressive, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, a walk, and a run scored. Ethan Lizama also excelled, going 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, a walk, and a run scored, while Ryan Wideman contributed significantly with a home run, an RBI, and a run in his 1-for-5 showing at the plate. Kyle Hayes provided the final RBI for WKU with a sacrifice fly.

As WKU celebrates its championship victory, the team is poised for its next challenge. The NCAA Regional destination will be announced during the College Baseball Selection Show scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. on ESPN2. This announcement will determine where the Hilltoppers will further showcase their talents in the postseason.
