Join the festivities on April 25 and 26 for an unforgettable evening of music at Van Meter Auditorium.

Bowling Green Gears Up for a Musical Milestone!

Bowling Green is buzzing with excitement as the Western Kentucky University (WKU) Bands prepare to mark a stunning century of musical achievements! That’s right folks, in 2025 this program will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. From its humble beginnings at the Western Kentucky Teachers College back in 1925, to now being a powerhouse of artistic expression with a roster of over 400 students, this milestone is certainly one for the books.

A Look Back in Time

Picture this: a modest band kicking off with just 18 members led by a determined student director named Joyce Felts. Fast forward to 1926 when Franz J. Strahm joined the ranks as the faculty director, and suddenly that number grew to 30 enthusiastic musicians. This simple start has blossomed into a vibrant band program celebrated within the community and beyond.

Celebratory Concerts Scheduled

To truly honor this monumental occasion, special gala concerts are lined up on April 25 and 26, 2025. The anticipation is building as local music lovers prepare to witness the extraordinary talents of both current and former WKU students and directors sharing the stage. As they say, there’s nothing like a live performance to bring the heart and soul of music to life!

A Star-Studded Line-Up

The first concert will feature the WKU Symphonic Band, previewed by the wonderful direction of Dr. Matthew McCurry, and the WKU Wind Ensemble, led by none other than Dr. Gary Schallert. Adding to the thrill, four former directors have been invited back to take the reins and conduct the ensembles—talk about a full-circle moment!

Excitingly, the audience can also look forward to performances from notable WKU alumni like Technical Sergeant Brandon Jones on euphonium and Master Sergeant Matthew Carmichael on alto saxophone. Their commitment to music and their alma mater continues to inspire.

Honoring the Past and Present

The second night will give the spotlight to the WKU Campus Community Band and will pay tribute to the contributions of past and present WKU directors. Guests can expect a beautiful rendition of Delibes’ Flower Duet, specially arranged by WKU music professor Matthew Herman.

Adding an extra dose of excitement, alumni percussionists like AJ Cook, Forrest Yankee, Andy Edelen, and Lucas Allen will grace the stage with a performance of Viet Cuong’s percussion concerto, Re(new)al. And, let’s not forget the big honor: MSG Larry Fergusson will receive the prestigious “Wall of Fame” Award at the concert, celebrating a legacy that has left a lasting impact.

Emphasizing Growth and Unity

Dr. Gary Schallert, the WKU Director of Bands, has expressed how impactful this band program has been over the years and how it continues to provide a platform for young musicians to unleash their talent. The concerts aim to showcase an incredible amalgamation of current and former students, creating an unforgettable evening steeped in tradition and camaraderie.

Get Your Tickets!

The concerts start at 7:30 PM at the renowned Van Meter Auditorium. General admission tickets will be available for just $10—a small price to pay for a night filled with sensational music. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online, so don’t miss out on this fantastic celebration!
