Born on December 1, 1939, in Scottsville, Kentucky, Johnson pursued higher education at Western Kentucky University (WKU), where she graduated with degrees in 1960 and 1968. During her professional career, she served as a teacher and home economist at Bowling Green Municipal Utilities from 1970 until her retirement in 1993.

Throughout her lifetime, Johnson was a driving force behind many nonprofit organizations and initiatives that significantly impacted the community. She played a pivotal role in establishing key local initiatives such as the Houchens Center for Women, the Rape Crisis Center, Hospice of Southern Kentucky, and the Dream Factory of Bowling Green.

A Lifetime of Service

In recognition of her exceptional volunteer service, Johnson received the WKU Distinguished Medal of Community and Public Service in 2023. She was also honored by the Salvation Army during their annual “Champions of Hope” luncheon for her significant contributions, which included assisting in the construction of the Center of Hope shelter and leading the Angel Tree Program.

Furthermore, Johnson and her husband, Ralph, made a lasting contribution to the community by donating 2.62 acres of land for the creation of Romanza Johnson Park. This nature park, which began development in 1997, has become a beloved spot for canoers and kayakers, reflecting Johnson’s commitment to enhancing community spaces.

As a member of various boards within civic organizations, Johnson taught Sunday School classes and regularly spoke at community events. Her dedication to service extended to a number of organizations, including Kids on the Block, the Salvation Army, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, and the Bowling Green-Warren County Welfare Board.
