News Summary

Potter College of Arts & Letters at Western Kentucky University is set to undergo a significant restructuring plan over the next three years, reducing its departments from eight to four or five schools. The change, aligned with the college’s 60th anniversary, aims to foster academic innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration while maintaining financial stability. The process will begin in Spring 2025 and is expected to be fully realized by the 2027-2028 academic year, with community involvement and a strategic planning committee driving the transformation.

Exciting Changes on the Horizon for Potter College of Arts & Letters!

Bowling Green is buzzing with excitement as the Potter College of Arts & Letters (PCAL) at Western Kentucky University has announced a major restructuring plan that promises to shake things up in a big way! Over the next three years, the college, which currently operates with eight departments and one school, will streamline its structure into a more efficient model featuring about four to five schools.

Why the Big Change?

The college, marking a significant milestone as it celebrates its 60th anniversary during the 2025-2026 academic year, is gearing up for a future that embraces innovation and collaboration. The goal? To enhance academic innovation and create a stronger focus on interdisciplinary collaboration while ensuring greater financial stability and long-term success!

As it stands, PCAL offers a solid mix of programs for students, including:

  • 30 undergraduate programs
  • 35 undergraduate minors
  • 17 undergraduate certificates
  • 5 graduate programs
  • 3 graduate certificates

When Will it All Happen?

The restructuring is set to kick off in the Spring 2025 semester, with the aim of evolving PCAL into a beacon of innovative education by the time the plans are fully realized in the 2027-2028 academic year.

Recent Moves Toward Change

This restructuring isn’t coming out of nowhere. In fact, PCAL already took a big step forward in 2022, when the School of Media and the Department of Communication combined forces to create the School of Media and Communication. This merger allowed for resource sharing and opened the doors to new collaborations between various academic units, setting a precedent for even further cooperation and development.

Involvement and Transparency

As part of this exciting transition, PCAL plans to host town hall meetings where students, faculty, and community members can come together to discuss the upcoming changes. It’s all about keeping everyone in the loop and making sure that the restructuring considers the unique voices and cultures within the college.

A strategic planning committee will also be formed, made up of representatives from each academic unit within PCAL, to work together on crafting a three-year strategic plan. This collaborative effort will guide the entire restructuring process and ensure that all perspectives are valued as the college evolves.

Commitment to Culture

Throughout this journey, there is a strong commitment to preserving the departmental cultures and identities that have long been established at PCAL. The idea is to embrace change while still honoring what makes each department unique and vibrant!

Looking Ahead

The upcoming years present a wealth of opportunities for growth at the Potter College of Arts & Letters. With thoughtful and engaging collaboration as the focus, the community can look forward to a more dynamic educational environment that attracts students, faculty, and external partners looking for innovative and enriching experiences.

So, here’s to the Potter College of Arts & Letters! Exciting times are definitely ahead as they pave the way for a new chapter in academic excellence and creativity!
