BOWLING GREEN — Kentucky Tourism Leader Highlights Economic Impact and New Developments

Nancy Turner, the deputy commissioner for the Kentucky Department of Tourism, visited Bowling Green to discuss the region’s burgeoning tourism industry. The visit, organized by the South Central Kentucky Hospitality Association, served as a platform to present insights into travel trends and ongoing initiatives designed to strengthen local tourism.

Turner’s address highlighted the importance of collaboration among local businesses to collectively promote tourism within the region. Her presentation occurred at The Mustang Club, an upcoming venue that includes a wine bar, speakeasy, and full-service restaurant. Officially opening on July 25, The Mustang Club is situated at 200 State St. It is notable for its historical significance as it was formerly the gymnasium of the State Street School, Bowling Green’s first African-American school. Local entrepreneur Derrick Huff played a pivotal role in repurposing the abandoned structure, ensuring the preservation of its original architectural beauty.

In 2024, the Kentucky tourism industry made a significant economic contribution of $479.8 million from Bowling Green and Warren County. This figure represents a marked increase in visitor spending, which reached $358.75 million, surpassing previous record numbers from 2023. Tourism represents a vital economic pillar for the community, supporting nearly 4,000 jobs in Warren County.

Community Resilience and Future Initiatives

During her presentation, Turner emphasized the resilience of the community and praised the partnerships that have bolstered the tourism sector. Sherry Murphy, the executive director of the Bowling Green Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, reiterated the vital role of community collaboration. Jamie Johnson, the executive director of the Historic RailPark & Train Museum, added that local attractions play a crucial role in stimulating economic activity.

Bowling Green is also working on various initiatives designed to enhance its tourism offerings. One significant project is the planning for the Bowling Green to Mammoth Cave Trail, expected to facilitate biking and walking between the two significant sites. This proposed trail is anticipated to stretch approximately 32 miles from Fountain Square Park in Bowling Green to Mammoth Cave National Park. According to Ethan Bates from BRADD, the trail aims to offer an alternative to car travel while promoting local tourism interests.

New Attractions and Experiences

Another exciting addition to Bowling Green’s tourism landscape is the launch of the Bluegrass Train Experience. This program involves participation from five Kentucky communities with historical train sites and includes 13 unique train attractions. Tourists are invited to partake in a passport program, allowing them to collect prizes by visiting these attractions. Participants can receive a passport and accumulate stickers from different train sites, earning rewards such as bandanas and enamel pins.

The Bowling Green Area Convention & Visitors Bureau serves as the official marketing organization for both the city and county, focusing on promoting the region as an attractive destination for leisure visits and event hosting. By enhancing the local tourism infrastructure and experiences, Bowling Green is poised not only to increase visitor numbers but also to strengthen its economic viability in the years to come.
