A severe weather outbreak in Kentucky on Friday resulted in 18 fatalities and left numerous individuals injured across the region. The devastating storm system is reported to have affected not only Kentucky but also led to nine additional fatalities in nearby states.

As of the latest updates, ten Kentuckians remain hospitalized in critical condition due to injuries sustained during the storms. Many of the deaths occurred in London, Laurel County, where 17 of the state’s fatalities took place. A powerful tornado is believed to have been the primary cause of widespread destruction in both Laurel and Pulaski Counties. Tragically, Major Leslie Roger Leatherman, a firefighter, lost his life while responding to the tornado in Laurel County.

Widespread Damage and Community Response

According to State Emergency Management Director Eric Gibson, hundreds of homes have suffered significant damage due to the extreme weather. An emergency shelter has been set up at a local high school to accommodate those displaced by the tornado, with the community rallying support by contributing essential items for those affected.

In Bowling Green, severe storms led to widespread power outages, causing downed trees and hail damage to numerous buildings and vehicles. Approximately 7,200 residents experienced difficulty due to the storms, with power restoration efforts making significant progress. By Saturday night, most power had been restored, and Warren Rural Electric Co-Op Corporation reported that over 90% of the 24,300 affected customers had their service restored by Sunday morning, leaving about 1,400 still without power.

City public works crews in Bowling Green were active throughout the weekend, clearing roadways of damaged trees and debris. Remarkably, eight 20-yard dumpsters filled with vegetative debris were collected from streets, highlighting the extensive cleanup effort required in the area.

Impact on Local Services and Infrastructure

Significant damage was also reported at Graves Gilbert’s Main Clinic located at 201 Park Street, impacting patient appointments for the coming week. Additionally, Mount Moriah Cemetery remains closed due to extensive damage from downed trees, necessitating specialized equipment for cleanup. Damaged structures include a light pole on Cemetery Road’s greenways trail, with indications that a vehicle may have caused the damage.

Other public facilities were not spared, as Fire Station 8 and a police cruiser sustained hail damage, while another police cruiser was severely damaged when a tree fell onto it during the storm.

Concerns and Future Outlook

The severe weather outbreak raised concerns regarding staffing levels at National Weather Service offices, which are currently facing high vacancy rates. Notable figures include a 25% vacancy rate in the Jackson office covering London and a 29% vacancy rate in the Louisville office recorded in March.

In preparation for potential further weather threats, today has been designated as a First Alert Weather Day due to expectations of additional severe storms. However, forecasts are indicating a return to drier and warmer conditions as the weekend approaches, with highs expected to decrease to the mid-70s by Wednesday.
