Bowling Green Man Arrested for Threatening Woman with Gun

A 44-year-old man, Marquis Burton, has been arrested and faces multiple charges in Bowling Green, Kentucky, after allegedly threatening a woman with a firearm. The incident occurred on Monday evening when the Bowling Green Police Department received a harassment complaint at an apartment, leading to Burton’s apprehension.

According to police reports, officers arrived at the apartment at approximately 5:16 p.m. after receiving a call indicating that Burton was inside the residence with a gun. Upon arrival, law enforcement instructed Burton to exit the apartment, which he did without further incident. During a search of the premises, officers discovered a firearm located in the kitchen.

Threatening Behavior and Charges

The female victim reported that Burton had been aggressively trying to enter the apartment by kicking the door. She eventually allowed him inside, resulting in a heated argument where Burton allegedly brandished a gun, holding it to her face and making threats to kill her. Notably, the incident occurred in the presence of a minor.

This was not the first instance of violence; the victim mentioned that Burton had previously held a gun to her neck, pushed her, and strangled her. Following this incident, Burton was arrested and taken to the Warren County Regional Jail. He is now facing several serious charges including first-degree wanton endangerment, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, first-degree strangulation (non-domestic violence), and third-degree terroristic threatening.

Concurrent School Threat Investigations in Kentucky

In a related context, the Bowling Green Police Department is also dealing with a rise in threats made against schools in the area. Police responded to a separate incident involving a vehicle driven by 42-year-old Silvia Pedroza, who allegedly waved a handgun at another driver. Upon her arrest, it was confirmed that the weapon was an unloaded Taurus PT 92 AFS 9mm handgun, leading to charges of aggravated menacing.

Across Kentucky, school districts are currently experiencing an uptick in threats made via social media platforms, which has caused significant concern for students and parents alike. Several arrests related to school threats have already been made, including that of a 14-year-old in Green County. In Warren County specifically, multiple schools such as Moss Middle School and South Warren Middle School were placed on lockdown due to these rumored threats.

Community Concerns and Safety Measures

Warren County Sheriff Brett Hightower has noted a significant increase in school-related threats, creating heightened anxiety for families throughout the community. As a response to the current climate of fear regarding school safety, there have been discussions about implementing additional security measures, such as metal detectors and policies on arming teachers.

Despite existing safety protocols and heightened security measures, it is important to recognize that there have already been 46 confirmed school shootings nationally in the current year. In light of these alarming statistics, Governor Andy Beshear has emphasized the necessity for stronger security measures and advocated for responsible firearm storage practices in homes. Moreover, he has called for the introduction of a red flag law aimed at preventing potential incidents of violence.

As safety measures are evaluated, Sheriff Hightower has assured the community that any changes in Warren County will be driven by research-based evidence to ensure effective solutions. Authorities are also urging individuals to report any threats they come across on social media platforms, especially those related to schools, to the appropriate officials without delay.
