Volunteers providing food and supplies for flood relief in Bowling Green

News Summary

In Bowling Green, residents and business owners are rallying to support recovery efforts after severe floods in southeastern Kentucky caused significant damage and loss of life. Local initiatives, spearheaded by Ashley Yawn and others, aim to provide food and essential supplies to those affected, particularly in London, where needs are urgent. Donations are being accepted, and efforts are ongoing to assist first responders and displaced individuals as the community comes together during this challenging time.

Bowling Green

Residents and business owners in Bowling Green are mobilizing to support recovery efforts following devastating floods in southeastern Kentucky that have left a trail of destruction and at least 21 reported deaths. In the wake of these storms, community members are gathering essential supplies and food to aid those affected, particularly in London, Kentucky, where needs are pressing.

Leading these humanitarian efforts is resident Ashley Yawn, who previously experienced the disastrous tornadoes of December 2021. This time, she is utilizing her food truck to assist in the relief efforts, partnering with fellow community member Renee Wakeland to transport meals and necessities to the hardest-hit areas. On Memorial Day, they plan to serve between 700 and 900 meals comprising hot dogs, chips, bottled water, fresh lemonade, fruit, and funnel cakes. This effort aims not only to provide sustenance but also to uplift the spirits of those grappling with the aftermath of the floods.

In addition to the food truck initiative, Yawn has been a consistent supporter of first responders, having prepared meals for them after the 2021 tornadoes. She feels a strong commitment to giving back to the community and helping current storm victims. The relief effort has already raised approximately $700 in donations alongside various supplies, although the organizers have made a specific request not to send clothing donations at this time. They are asking for additional contributions such as tarps, toiletries, and baby products to meet the evolving needs of the affected populations.

Donations can be dropped off at Yawn’s food truck located in Bowling Green or at Rogue City Resale in Russellville. Furthermore, the Kroger Company has joined in recovery initiatives, allowing customers to round up their purchases to donate to the American Red Cross. Kroger is also providing hygiene products and food to local shelters established in Laurel County to serve those displaced by the floods.

In response to the severe flooding, Bowling Green Mayor Todd Alcott has declared a state of emergency. This declaration is intended to facilitate rapid disaster responses and help secure federal assistance for the affected areas. According to Public Information Officer Debi West, the floodwaters pose significant health risks due to contamination. Responding teams have undertaken multiple rescues, including two confirmed physical rescues, and are actively monitoring for hazards such as sinkholes and blocked storm drains throughout the city.

Meanwhile, numerous road closures are currently in effect as flooded areas remain hazardous for drivers. Residents are being urged to avoid travel through affected roadways to ensure their safety. The impacts of the floods have been extensive, leading to power outages and disrupting the daily lives of many Kentuckians.

Governor Andy Beshear has commented on the situation, indicating that Kentucky is undergoing one of its worst natural disasters in recent memory. He expressed gratitude for the community’s outpouring of support and the proactive measures being taken to assist those affected by this disaster. The local and state responses reflect a strong commitment to ensuring the safety and recovery of the region’s residents as they navigate the challenges ahead.
