Jefferson City, Tennessee – Charlotte Ruth Meredith, a longtime resident of Cullman, Alabama, passed away on September 26, 2025, just four days after her 97th birthday. Born on September 22, 1928, she was the last surviving sibling of the Causey family and had lived in Jefferson City since August 2024 to be closer to her son, Jeff, and his wife, Tracy.

Meredith’s life began in Hadley, Kentucky, where she was born to parents Mable and E.B. Causey. She completed her education at Western Kentucky College High School in Bowling Green in 1946, later earning her nursing degree at St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing in Nashville, and finishing her training at Nashville General Hospital. Throughout her career, she worked as a nurse in various locations, including San Diego, California; Bowling Green, Kentucky; and Vestavia, Alabama. Additionally, she volunteered her nursing skills during summers for handicapped children at Camp Sumatanga in St. Clair County, Alabama.

On June 8, 1950, Charlotte married William (Bill) Rhea Meredith Jr., a union that lasted fifty-nine years until Bill’s passing in 2009. Bill served in the Navy and held administrative roles at AT&T and South Central Bell. The couple moved several times for Bill’s job, living in Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina; Summit and Berkeley Heights, New Jersey; Vestavia, Alabama; and Louisville, Kentucky. Charlotte and Bill raised five children: Nancy, William, Jennifer, John, and Jeff, as well as three foster children: Bobby Wallace, Amy Grob, and Annie Sexton. Tragically, their daughter Jennifer passed away at eight months in 1956, and their daughter Nancy died at twenty-four in 1977.

Charlotte was known for her great sense of humor, her warmth, and her talent as a seamstress, making suits for Bill and costumes for her children. She relished spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A devout Christian, she was a lifelong member of Methodist churches and enjoyed singing in church choirs. Charlotte dedicated herself to caring for her family members during their later years, embodying a spirit of service.

Her culinary skills were widely recognized; some of her signature dishes included biscuits, beef brisket, chocolate pie, squash casserole, and jam cake. The beef brisket recipe even graced the cover of the 2006 “Taste of Cullman” cookbook. Charlotte took the time to create personalized recipe books for each of her children, featuring their favorite recipes alongside childhood photographs. Beyond cooking, she was a passionate gardener and enjoyed decorating her homes with antiques, often hosting dinner parties.

A memorial service for Charlotte will take place at St. Andrew’s Global Methodist Church in Cullman, Alabama, on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, her remains will be interred beside her husband and daughters at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 2 p.m.
