She spent her final moments at Hospice of Southern Kentucky.
Born on May 23, 1948, in Margaretville, NY, to Dewey and Ramona Hornbeck, Kummer cherished her idyllic childhood in Andes, NY. Growing up in the Catskill Mountains, she enjoyed outdoor adventures and a tight-knit community along with her younger brother Donald. Her family instilled in her a strong sense of community and service that would shape her future.
At 18, Kummer began her higher education at Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, earning a BA in psychology. Following her studies, she married William “Biff” Kummer of Tomahawk, WI, with whom she nurtured a friendship centered on family values and mutual respect.
After obtaining a Master’s degree in social work from the University of Utah, Alice relocated to Bowling Green, KY, where she became a prominent figure in community service. Her lasting legacy can be traced back to her advocacy work for children, particularly for those with disabilities. She played a pivotal role at ACLD (Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities), driving initiatives that brought positive changes in policies and practices benefiting children across the state.
In 1985, Kummer co-founded the South Central Kentucky Kids on the Block puppetry program, dedicating 17 years as its executive director. This educational program was designed to raise awareness among children about disabilities and other challenging topics, such as childhood abuse and grief. Through her leadership, the program reached numerous children, promoting compassion and understanding in the community.
Beyond her work with children, Kummer was known for her passion for gardening. She served as a Master Gardener and held the position of past president of the Bowling Green Garden Club. Her efforts extended to organizing community events, notably the Bowling Green Garden Club’s Fairy Garden tour and the Kids on the Block Garden Tour, both of which enriched the local culture and engaged the public in the joys of gardening.
Throughout her life, Kummer contributed to a number of organizations, including the Houchens Center for Women, Bowling Green Woman’s Club, and PEO Chapter O, where she often took leadership roles. Her dedication to mentoring children and young adults left a lasting impression, and she maintained meaningful relationships with many in her community.
She is remembered for her generosity, kindness, unwavering faith, and a deep commitment to her community. Kummer expressed resilience during her illness, emphasizing her strong faith in God as a source of comfort.
Alice Kummer is survived by her two children, Christopher Kummer (married to Lauren) of Bowling Green, KY, and Katherine Kummer of New York City, as well as her granddaughter, Raffaella Varughese. She also leaves behind her brother, Donald Hornbeck (married to Lilia Todd) of Mt. Tremper, NY, and several nieces, nephews, and grand-children.
A Celebration of Life was held on July 8, 2025, with visitation scheduled the day prior. Following her wishes, cremation was chosen, and inurnment will take place at Fairview Cemetery. The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the South Central Kentucky Kids on the Block program, ensuring that Kummer’s legacy of advocacy for children continues to flourish.
Kummer’s commitment to her community and her passionate support for children, especially those with disabilities, have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on countless lives.
