Born on May 18, 1942, in Campton, Kentucky, during World War II, James Couch was raised in Lexington, Kentucky. After graduating from Lafayette High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served with distinction in the 307th Bombardment Wing. His military service included critical missions such as the Bay of Pigs in 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, during which he operated as an Electromagnetic Radiation Communication Specialist. These experiences profoundly shaped his subsequent career in electronics and technology.
During a brief leave while serving in the Air Force, James married his high school sweetheart, Gena Faye Lewis. The couple began their family in Lincoln, Nebraska, where they lived during his military service. After returning to Lexington following his service, James and Gena established “Couch Electronics,” marking the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey.
Career and Contributions
In the summer of 1979, the Couch family relocated to Glasgow, where James opened The Audio Center in the Central Center Shopping Center. He was a pioneer in the local technology scene, introducing personal home computers to the area with models such as the Commodore 64 and Vic 20. His passion for technology did not end there; at age 40, he pursued further education at Western Kentucky University, earning multiple bachelor’s degrees in Science, Technology, Physics, and Religious Studies, as well as a master’s degree in Secondary Education.
James had a fulfilling teaching career, sharing his expertise first at Barren County Vocational School, then at Southern Kentucky Technical College, and eventually retiring from Western Kentucky University. Family and Legacy
James Couch is survived by his sister, Patricia Hager, and his five children: Kellie Couch Hopper, Scott Couch, Gena Couch Rowe, Chris Couch, and Andy Couch. He also leaves behind a loving legacy of 20 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his values of service and community involvement.
