Caneyville, KY – Carolyn Jean Evans, 80, of Caneyville, KY, passed away on July 3, 2025, at Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center in Leitchfield, KY. Known for her warm spirit and love for family, Carolyn’s life was filled with cherished moments and countless connections, which continue to resonate through her loved ones.

Born on January 30, 1945, in Big Reedy, KY, Carolyn was the youngest of three daughters, raised by her late parents, Ray Evans and Imogene Huff Evans. Throughout her life, she engaged in various activities that brought her joy, including reading and studying the Bible. Carolyn also enjoyed playing games such as Bingo, working on crossword and word search puzzles, and playing Solitaire. A favorite saying she carried all her life was taught to her by her grandmother, Leora Bolton Huff, referred to as “Two Mama”: “Pretty is as pretty does,” a lesson she passed down to her daughters.

Throughout her career, Carolyn and her former husband, Leonard G Smith, owned and operated Smith Shoes in Morgantown, Leitchfield, and Bowling Green, KY, for many years. The couple worked diligently, creating a legacy centered around their family business and community involvement.

Carolyn is survived by her three daughters: Renee and Tim Fisher of Bowling Green, KY; Tosha M. and Gordon Mudd of Caneyville, KY; and Stephanie and Wendell Dunn of Morgantown, KY. She was a proud grandmother to four grandchildren: Kyle and Mindy Madison of Dayton, OH; Kent and Jessica Madison of Bowling Green, KY; Olivia and Austin West of Morgantown, KY; and a special granddaughter, Shiana Embry of Roundhill, KY. In addition to her grandchildren, Carolyn leaves behind 21 great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren, offering a lasting legacy of love and family ties.

Carolyn also had three stepchildren: Eric and Kim Gibson, Robert and Aimee Gibson, and Adam and Merriann Gibson. She was deeply cherished by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Gibson, and the father of her children, Leonard G Smith. Both were significant figures in her life, and their memories remain vivid in the hearts of those who knew them. She also mourned the loss of her two sisters, Theda Ray Huff and Pauline Snell, as well as her brother-in-law, Obie Huff, and grandson LCPL Timothy Kirk Madison, USMC.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Dermitt Funeral Home in Leitchfield, KY, with Bro. David Brown officiating. Prior to the service, visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service, allowing family and friends to gather and celebrate Carolyn’s life. The family has expressed their gratitude for the prayers and support during this poignant time.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dermitt Funeral Home to assist with final expenses, located at 306 W Main Street, Leitchfield, KY 42754. Carolyn Jean Evans will be remembered for her generosity, kindness, and profound impact on her family and community.
