Bowling Green, KY – In an effort to combat food insecurity affecting millions of Americans, Warren County Public Schools (WCPS) has launched a summer nutrition program, marking a crucial step in providing meals to children during the summer months. Nearly 47 million individuals in the U.S., including 14 million children, are food insecure, as reported by Feeding America. The initiative aims to alleviate some of that hunger in local communities, particularly as costs of living continue to rise.

As part of this program, WCPS is introducing drive-through food drives for the first time. Families can collect nutritious meals for their children aged 18 and under at designated pickup locations including Alvaton Elementary, Warren East Middle School, South Warren Middle School, Cumberland Trace Elementary, and North Warren Elementary. Throughout June and July, families are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity, with the option to collect six days’ worth of food—a substantial savings for affected families, potentially totaling hundreds of dollars.

Additionally, the summer meal schedule will offer daily meals along with School Bus Cafe services, providing multiple meal pickups to ensure that children have access to food while school is not in session. On-site meals are also available at Bristow Elementary on weekdays until June 27, contributing further to the program’s scope to serve food-insecure families.

The significance of proper nutrition for children’s growth and learning is emphasized by WCPS’s director of nutrition and dining services. Local residents express their gratitude for the support the program offers, especially considering the heightened food costs many are currently experiencing. Single parents and caregivers alike express the essential nature of these food distribution efforts in ensuring their children are fed adequately.

Complementing the WCPS program, the local community will also host several events aimed at raising funds and awareness around food insecurity. The upcoming Restaurant Week BG, scheduled from June 16 – 22, involves various local restaurants donating 10% of their sales to the Brown Bag Food Project of Wood County. This year marks the participation of 26 new partner restaurants, including Guajillo’s Cocina Mexicana and Everyday People Café, contributing to a collective drive to support local food initiatives.

Another notable event, Empty Bowls of Bowling Green, will hold its 11th annual dinner on March 6 at Forest Park Baptist Church. This year’s event will see a return to a sit-down dining experience for the first time since COVID-19 restrictions were in place. During the event, attendees will enjoy soup from local restaurants and will have the opportunity to choose a handcrafted bowl as a reminder of the ongoing hunger issues faced in the community. In past years, Empty Bowls has successfully raised over $10,000, benefiting organizations like HOTEL INC and Warren County Schools’ Synergy Center.

Tickets for the Empty Bowls event are set to go on sale in the second week of February, priced at $15, which will include the meal along with a take-home bowl to reflect on the community’s collective efforts to assist those facing food insecurity.

Through these initiatives, Bowling Green is taking vital steps to address the pressing issue of food insecurity, ensuring that children and families are supported during the summer months and beyond.
