WKU Student Selected for DAAD RISE Germany Program

Bowling Green, Kentucky – WKU Student Achieves Prestigious Research Position in Germany

Cole Meador, a student at Western Kentucky University (WKU), has been accepted into the DAAD RISE Germany program for the summer research internship. This marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first WKU student selected for this program since 2012. The DAAD RISE Germany program, which commenced in 2005, provides summer research internships for undergraduate students from North America, Britain, and Ireland, aimed at fostering student exchange in the fields of natural science, engineering, and life sciences.

During his time in Germany, Meador will be conducting research at Forschungszentrum Jülich, a prominent national research institution. His project will focus on the time series analysis of calcium imaging data from neurons that are subjected to various types of stimulation. As part of the internship, Meador will also present his findings in Heidelberg, Germany, showcasing his work alongside international peers.

Academic Background and Research Experience

Cole Meador is currently a rising junior, pursuing a degree in Biochemistry and Mathematics. He hails from Scottsville, Kentucky, and is the son of Amy and Craig Meador. At WKU, he is actively involved in research under the guidance of Dr. Hilary Katz, focusing on larval sea lamprey. His involvement in research is complemented by his role as co-secretary of the WKU Chemistry Club and membership in the WKU Mahurin Honors College.

Meador has previously showcased his research at significant events, including the WKU Student Scholar Showcase and WKU Data Science Day. He is dedicated to furthering his academic career and has plans to pursue an M.D./Ph.D. with a specialization in neurological research, particularly concerning drug and biomarker discovery for movement disorders.
