Bowling Green Community Mourns Beloved Music Mentor Joseph Stites

The vibrant city of Bowling Green, Kentucky, is coming together to celebrate the life and legacy of a remarkable educator, Joseph Newton Stites, who passed away on March 1, 2025, at the age of 69. Joseph’s battle with dementia for the last few years was tough for his family and friends, but now they cherish the special memories he created during his time spent with them and the numerous lives he impacted through music.

A Life Devoted to Music and Education

Joseph Stites was much more than just a music educator; he was a cherished mentor to countless future teachers and faculty at Western Kentucky University (WKU). His commitment to the department began back in 1987 and continued until his retirement, during which he was instrumental in shaping the curriculum, enhancing scholarship programs, and providing invaluable student advising. He played a pivotal role in fostering a deep love and appreciation for music in his students.

His influence wasn’t limited just to WKU; he also made his mark in the wider music education community as a former president of the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA). Colleagues and students remember him as a kind soul, admired for his generous heart and his ability to bring laughter into stressful moments. Stories circulate among his students about how he lightened the mood in the classroom by reading Dr. Seuss books. This unique approach made learning even more enjoyable for all.

A Legacy of Excellence

Joseph’s dedication to music truly shone brightly, as shown when he was inducted into the WKU Department of Music Wall of Fame in 2022, a prestigious recognition of his unwavering commitment to music education. Just earlier this year, he also received the Robyn Swanson Legacy Award for his outstanding contributions to the community.

Born on July 14, 1955, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Joseph grew up in a family that valued education and music. He was active in music from a young age, having joined the high school band in eighth grade. Joseph went on to earn numerous accolades, including KMEA Superior Ratings for his tuba performance.

Education and Career Highlights

Joseph was an alumnus of Hopkinsville High School and went on to achieve both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in music education from WKU and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, respectively. His impact as an educator was felt far and wide, with teaching roles at various high schools across Kentucky and a position at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon returning to WKU, he taught methods and education courses for aspiring music educators while serving as the Associate Director of Bands and Interim Department Head.

His passion for performing extended to involvement with the WKU Faculty Brass Quintet and the Bowling Green-WKU Symphony Orchestra, where he contributed to the local arts scene. Additionally, he served as a clinician for the All-District Bands throughout Kentucky and was even a founding musician of the Southern Kentucky Concert Band. Joseph’s remarkable service in music even earned him the esteemed Citation for Service from the KMEA in 2008, highlighting his legacy in the world of music education.

Remembering Joseph Stites

As the community gathers to honor Joseph, visitation will take place at J.C. Kirby & Son Broadway Chapel on March 6, 2025. His loved ones have planned a funeral Mass for March 13 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Hopkinsville. Additionally, a special Celebration of Joe Stites’s Life is set to occur in June 2025, with the exact date still to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, Joseph’s family encourages donations to Hospice of Southern Kentucky or a public school band program of choice. His legacy will undoubtedly live on, not only in the music he loved but in the hearts of all who knew him.
